How to play 2048 and make deliberate moves

2048 is a small grid with a simple goal: slide matching numbered tiles together until you create a tile marked 2048. Each valid move shifts the entire board, combines equal neighboring values once, and adds a new tile in an empty square.

Learn what one move can merge

Open 2048 and use an arrow key, WASD, or a swipe on a touch screen. A row containing 2, 2, 2, 2 becomes 4, 4, empty, empty when moved left. It does not immediately become an 8 because a tile created by a merge cannot merge again in that same move. The score increases by the value of each new tile created.

Keep room for the next tile

Every successful move adds another small tile. If the grid fills and no adjacent equal values can merge, the game ends. One practical approach is to keep a high-value tile near a corner and build neighboring values in order. This is a strategy to try, not a guarantee: new tiles appear with randomness.

Look one or two moves ahead before swiping. A move that makes one attractive merge can scatter larger tiles and close useful spaces. If a row has no empty square, consider whether the next move can combine anything before moving in that direction.
